The present policy and strategy builds on the Public Nutrition Policy and Strategy for 20032006, which was slightly modified in 2005 and has guided the work of the Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) in nutrition until 2008. In the first Public Nutrition Policy and Strategy, the Government of Afghanistan, and the MoPH in particular, affirmed its commitment “to promote, protect and fulfil the rights of all people to adequate food and nutrition as stated in the International Declarations and Conventions on Human Rights.” The MoPH adopted a public nutrition approach, based on the Conceptual Framework of Malnutrition (developed by UNICEF in 1992), presented in Figure 1, on the next page.
Understanding nutrition is important because the food you ingest on a day-to-day basis will have an immense influence on how your body feels and functions. Nutrition is the key to good health. Good health is not imperative to physical health alone, it implies mental and social well-being as well. In short, it means a healthy body, also provides a healthy mind and spirit.
Knowing the facts about nutrition will also help you realise that fad or ‘yo-yo’ diets can be detrimental to your physical and mental health. Learn from the resources available here, and enjoy the best of physical and mental health.
